University open days happen between May and August each year. They're free, and they're one of the best ways to figure out where you want to study.

Before You Go

Check which universities have open days coming up โ€” they're usually listed on the university's website by March. Register in advance if required. Make a list of 3-5 questions you want answered.

Questions to Ask

What's the first year like for my programme? What support is available for first-year students? What are the halls of residence like? What scholarships are available? What's the graduate employment rate for this programme?

Talk to Current Students

Students will give you the honest version โ€” what they wish they'd known, what they love, what they'd change. Most open days have student ambassadors specifically there to answer questions.

Visit the Campus Properly

Walk around, check out the library, the student common areas, the food options. Try to imagine spending three or four years there. The vibe matters โ€” a university where you feel comfortable will be one where you study better.

If You Can't Attend in Person

Most universities now offer virtual open days or online tours. These aren't as good as being there but they're better than nothing.

After the Open Day

Write down your impressions while they're fresh. Compare universities on the things that matter to you: programme quality, location, campus feel, support services, cost of living in that city.
