Important: NZ qualifications are changing

This guide is based on current NCEA requirements. If you're graduating before 2030, this information applies to you.

Maybe you've missed credits. Maybe your grades aren't where they need to be. Maybe you're in Year 13 and just realised you might not meet University Entrance. Don't panic โ€” there are options.

Figure Out Where You Stand

First, figure out exactly where you are. Log into your NZQA Learner Login and check your credit count. Talk to your dean or careers advisor and ask them to assess your position honestly.

If You're Short on Credits

Ask your teachers about resubmission opportunities for internal assessments. Some schools allow this, some don't. Also check if there are extra assessments you can pick up in remaining subjects.

If You Won't Meet UE This Year

If you're in Year 13 and won't meet UE, you have several paths:

  • Year 14: Come back for an extra year to pick up missing credits. Some students do this โ€” it's more common than you think.
  • Bridging/foundation programmes: Universities and polytechnics offer these specifically to get you to UE level. Massey, AUT, and Otago all have good options.
  • Alternative pathways: Polytechnics offer diplomas and certificates that don't always require UE. Complete one, then transfer into a degree later.

Don't Wait

The worst thing you can do is give up or pretend the problem doesn't exist. Every week you wait makes it harder to fix. Talk to your school this week.
